John Hutson and his U class locomotive in 5" gauge. The prototypes were originally called the River class, or 'K', named after southern rivers; they were the only 3 cylinder 2-6-4 tank locos. They were all rebuilt into 2 cylinder tender locos after 13 passengers died in a crash in 1927, due to bad riding. It was found the LSWR's cheap budget, badly laid tracks caused 'washing' in the side tanks at high speed, leading to the derailment. This loco is a regular public performer here, as has been running for some 15 or so years. He has already worn out the original boiler on it!!! This loco is made to Martin Evan's 'Ashford' design, and John built it himself from scratch. He has since repainted it in British Railways black.
